ABSTRACT: Environmental Research Priorities for the Australian Offshore Industry--A Consensus Approach

CURRY, DAVID, BHP Petroleum, New South Wales, Australia

Despite the excellent environmental record of the Australian offshore petroleum industry, and the substantial body of international scientific research relating to environmental impacts of petroleum exploration, there is limited awareness in the Australian marine science community of industry practices that support this Australian achievement, or of the relevant international science research base.

Further, there is no consensus within the Australian petroleum exploration and production industry, or between the industry and the marine science community regarding environmental research priorities relevant to the industry in Australia.

To participate in the environmental debate in Australia relating to offshore petroleum development, the industry must build stronger links with the Australian marine science community and establish an agreed direction for future research.

This paper describes an initiative being undertaken by the Australian offshore petroleum industry, through the Australian Petroleum Exploration Association to address the issue.
