ABSTRACT: Hydrocarbon Potential of Western Indonesia

CHESTERMAN, J. PATRICK, Bow Valley Industries Ltd., Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The exploration potential for hydrocarbons in western Indonesia can be ranked by an analysis of the distribution of source, reservoir, and seal. This distribution is strongly influenced by the development of a series of back-arc basins that are themselves controlled in time and space by the degree of convergence between the Indian and Sunda plates.

A series of Tertiary plate reconstructions are developed from published data. These reconstructions are integrated with the published stratigraphy and basin history of the five major basins in order to build an accompanying series of paleogeographic maps.

These maps, used to illustrate the distribution of source, reservoir, and seal, are overlaid in a final synthesis to indicate areas of hydrocarbon exploration potential. The distribution of known oil and gas fields provides a positive check on the result.

This technique of exploration potential prediction from the integration of a plate tectonic model with known stratigraphy may be applicable in other areas where basic well data are sparse or difficult to obtain.
