Porosity Prediction in Feldspathic Sandstones of the Los Angeles Basin Using Apatite Fission Track Analysis

A thermal history model based on fission track analysis was used to predict porosity in Miocene-Pliocene feldspathic sandstones of the the Los Angeles basin. This young, tectonically active basin is made up of structural blocks that have had different tectonic and thermal histories providing an ideal location to confirm and apply this predictive model of reservoir quality. Apatite fission track analysis was performed on sandstones taken from several wells and outcrop locations strategically located within the basin. A forward modeling routine was used to determine the time-temperature paths during burial of the rocks. The integrated thermal history curves on the time-temperature diagrams were determined in degrees Kelvin-seconds. The thermal history values thus defined correlate well ith the extent of feldspar dissolution (expressed as feldspar/feldspar + quartz) and measured porosity of each sample. This empirical relationship predicts the extent of feldspar dissolution and present-day porosity in feldspathic sandstones of the Los Angeles basin. The overall reservoir quality prediction method establishes methods more reliable than conventional methods based upon porosity-depth or porosity-vitrinite reflectance curves.
