ABSTRACT: Global Geoscience Transect, Guangzhou to Palawan

Weijun Zhen

The Global Geoscience Transect from Guangzhou to Palawan is planned to study the geostructures of the south China Sea.

Data indicate the following: (1) The Moho and bottom of lithosphere of South China Sea show undulation and are the mirror image of the surface topography. (2) Crust structures display heterogeneities both in horizontal and vertical directions. Five terranes have been recognized. They have passed through complicated convergent and divergent histories. (3) The crustal structures are closely related to the flow within the asthenosphere.
