The Naval Weapons Center, China Lake, California, has the lead laboratory role for the development of geothermal resources on Navy-controlled lands. Such development not only involves normal exploration technology to determine what lands are potential geothermal-resource areas but also requires the solution of complex legal and institutional issues. The Coso geothermal area is being developed at the Naval Weapons Center as the example.
