Abstract: Interpretation of Tectonic and Sedimentation Rates from Continuum of Stratigraphic-Sequence Models
A. Eugene Fritsche
Many stratigraphers have shown how regional stratigraphic sequences can indicate tectonic and sedimentation rates. Curray's classification of transgressions and regressions, however, gives us a base from which to expand Busch's stratigraphic-sequence models for the purpose of creating a unified scheme or continuum of models with which the stratigraphic record can be compared to analyze the tectonic framework of sedimentation.
Twenty-six stratigraphic-sequence models have been constructed, each of which corresponds, on Curray's classification chart, to a point that is defined by a relative rate of emergence or subsidence and a relative rate of net deposition. Comparison of ancient stratigraphic sequences with the models demonstrates their usefulness for analyses of sedimentation and tectonics.
