Abstract: Results of Beach Nourishment Using Dredge Spoil, Fort Massachusetts, Ship Island, Mississippi
V. J. Henry, R. T. Giles
During March 1974, approximately 382,000 cu m of spoil from maintenance dredging of Ship Island Pass was utilized in constructing an artificial beach for protecting Fort Massachusetts. Erosion has predominated with the shoreline retreating an average of 1.9 m/month; the eastern half retreating 5.1 m/month and the western half advancing 1.3 m/month. Major changes are in response to northwest and northeast storms which tend to smooth the originally irregular shoreline, adjust the beach toward a profile of equilibrium, and cause nearshore shoaling.
